Man vs Food – Phaal Curry the Hottest Curry on the Planet

Chicken Curry, Thai Green Curry, Coconut Curry, and Indian Curry are all familiar curry’s to the avid curry fanatic, but what makes curry so delicious? For some it may be the taste, for others it may be the spice. Curry powder is a powder base additive (mixture of spices) which is cooked with meat or vegetables that provide that added piqaunte flavor to your meal. However, if the generic curry is not spicy enough for you, then you are someone who needs to try Phaal curry.

Phaal curry is apparently the hottest curry sauce on this planet to be made into a dish served to human beings. Whatever you want to call it, Phaal curry is something which I will probably never try. Reason being, I would just pass out after inhaling the smell of the curry.

However, if you want to try the curry, there is this restaurant in New York City called Brick Lane Curry House that currently has a challenge involving Phaal Curry. What is the challenge? The challenge is for anyone who is able to finish the Phaal Curry, they will be deemed a winner. As a result, the winner will receive a free beer, a certificate of completion and a picture posted on the p’hall wall of fame. If you want more information you can go to Website: http://www.bricklanecurryhouse.com/

In addition, after hearing about the challenge I did some poking around the web and came across this video. Adam Richman, the host of Man vs Food takes up the challenge at Brick Lane Curry House. Does he successfully complete the challenge? Watch the video and see for yourself.

Stonegrill on Winchestor

When it comes to fine dining in Toronto, you can definitely say that we go all out. Every year the City of Toronto hosts a two week long event called Winterlicious, where local GTA restaurants participate and provide awesome deals for your avid food fanatic.

Ever wanted to try a fine dining restaurant but found the meals a tad expensive? Well fear not, Winterlicious helps target that demographic who loves to fine dine but are money conscious. I will categorize myself as one of those individuals. However, when it comes to  fine dining I believe that the price you pay for a dish should be represented in the quality and portion of the meal, not in the dress code or decor.

On to the topic of review – Stonegrill on Winchester.

If I could say one thing about the restaurant, I’d say Stonegrill is quite interesting. They are conveniently located in Cabbagetown, home to many different delicious restaurants on the strip. Stonegrill is located near Parliament and Carlton on Winchester Street, which provides lots of free parking. When you walk into the doors of Stonegrill, the first thing you will notice is the smell. The smell within the establishment is quite smokey because of all the meat grilling on the mini barbecues (stonegrill).

Stonegrill with Meat

As soon as you walk in, you can instantly see the decor of the restaurant. It has a very cozy and romantic feel. The right amount of light for an intimate dinner out with friends, family or your significant other.

Where I was seated was behind a television and a relatively comfy seating area with a fireplace. However, the decor was not  what fascinated me to try the restaurant but more the opinions and reviews I received from my friends.

Our Experience

We were slightly early for our reservations by 15 minutes but due to the amount of free tables, I don’t believe that was an issue. As the night went on however, we noticed that the tables started to fill. We waited about 10 minutes before we were even acknowledged by anyone. We were seated in a very secluded area but we noticed that another couple seated nearby who came after us, was served their water first and their order taken first. That was our first turn off of the restaurant. Finally, one of the waiters came to get us some water. However, he did not take our order. It was after about 5 minutes that our actual waiter came and took our order down.

Our appetizers didn’t take long to arrive, more or less 5 to 10 minutes. After completely consuming our appetizers, we waited patiently for our “Stonegrill experience.” We were constantly chatting during the evening (but noticed that our food has taken 20 or more minutes so far) so when we saw that three other tables who had arrived after us had gotten their main dishes, we started to look for our waiter. He seemed quite oblivious for a bit, which was the second strike at the restaurant. He finally noticed and came up to our table. He asked us whether we got our main dishes yet and we replied no. He then apologized and said that he put it into the system but was unsure why it got mixed up. He left and came back shortly to inform us that our meals were arriving soon. Seriously, how hard is it to heat up a stone and put a piece of raw meat on it? Clearly not that difficult because that is what we got.

I ordered an Organic Sterling Silver Striploin that came with some side vegetables, roast potatoes and mushroom wine sauce to compliment the steak. I ordered the 26 Day-Aged Beef Tenderloin with the same sides. It was pretty interesting to watch the meat cook in front of us. However, those rare meat lovers like Ray, had to constantly take the meat off of the stone grill to prevent it from overcooking. I on the other hand didn’t mind it because I enjoy my steak medium well. I found the steak quite mediocre. It didn’t have any specific taste that I was hoping to achieve. It was good, but I felt it could have been a lot better. The only good part of this experience is that your steak is constantly kept at a hot temperature providing the perfect texture and temperature to eat (as long as you don’t forget and overcook it).

The dessert we had consisted of Strawberry Shortcake and Bailey’s Cheesecake. For a restaurant such as Stonegrill with their pricey menus, one would assume that they possibly made their desserts in house, or ordered from a fine external bakery. However, that is not the case.

LaRocca Cheesecake

We overheard the waiter telling another table that they get their desserts from an external bakery that uses fine ingredients and that it was very delicious and well worth it. When we got our desserts, I felt the cake were pretty standard, borderline generous. But when we tasted the desserts, I felt that the shortcake tasted too simple and was absolutely convinced that the cheesecake was something  from LaRocca that could be purchased at Loblaws. I did a check on the LaRocca website and it was indeed the same cakes. I explicitly remember the spider web chocolate that topped off my cheesecake with the Oreo crunch on the bottom from my last LaRocca experience. LaRocca desserts are good don’t get me wrong, however, for an establishment charging extreme prices and giving us desserts that we can purchase on our own from Loblaws, it didn’t leave me with a lasting impression to go back again. Especially with the combination of bad service, mediocre taste and long wait time.

In the end, Stonegrill on Winchestor was a dissapointment. With a Winterlicious price tag of $35 a person (not including taxes or tip) where one would receive an appetizer, steak, and dessert, I believe the money could be spent somewhere else, IE) The Keg Steakhouse. If you thought that $35 was expensive, just go to the restaurant on a regular day. You will notice that an appetizer will cost you about $9, a steak $45, and dessert another $9 adding up to a grand total of $63, give or take $70 with taxes (one person). $70 for something that is not extraordinary is just plain absurd. The only way I would go back to Stonegrill is during Winterlicious and that’s if I am feeling generous in blowing $35.

Why do I think so lowly of Stonegrill? For one, the service was extremely slow, the food was mediocre at best, and the experience was not mind blowing as some people had suggested. In addition, the prices on the dishes were just plain ridiculous. PERIOD! If you plan on charging such high prices for your food, please use some of that revenue to hire additional staff to better your service. I am sure there is enough money to spread around and keep your pockets full at the same time.

Overall, on a scale out of 10 I would give Stonegrill on Winchester a 6/10.

Price – 5/10 – Prices is just outrages
Taste – 6/10 – Taste is meh!
Size – 6/10 – The portion is what it should be for a steak.

The Big Texan Challenge

One day you are sitting on a bus minding your own business when all of a sudden you over hear some dude talking to his friend about a challenge called, ‘The Big Texan Challenge.’ Having no idea what this is you go home to Google it, only to find out that it is a challenge involving a 72 ounce steak.

What is the challenge? Eat a 72 ounce steak including the side dishes within one hour. The side dishes consist of coleslaw, mashed potatoes, and a salad. If you complete the challenge within the hour, the meal is considered free. If you fail, the meal will cost you $54.99 plus taxes.

You think it is easy, well lets put the size into perspective. A 72 ounce steak is equivalent to the height of your wrist and the size of a small frisbee. In my opinion, I think that is huge. I consider myself a big eater, in addition a big steak eater. However, attempting the 72 ounce steak is just plain madness.

72 ounce steak

Still think it is easy? Well, if you are up for the challenge than you can try to tackle the Big Texan at Texas Lonestar Grill.

Before you decide you take on this challenge, make sure you call 2 days in advance. The restaurant needs to prepare the steak prior to your arrival.

This challenge has always intrigued me. Therefore, one of my goals for 2011 is to attempt the Big Texan Challenge during the summer days. In addition, I will post a recorded time of 56 minutes and 17 seconds.

If you have attempted this crazy, massive challenge do post your advice and tips. Failure is unacceptable and any tips would be helpful in achieving this goal.

In the meantime, Eat wello and enjoy!

Royal Jasmine – Royal Hakka Food

Royal Jasmine

Royal Jasmine Storefront

Royal Jasmine is an authentic Asian and Indian Chinese restaurant, better known as Hakka cuisine.

History Snippet 101

The reason why the food is called Hakka cuisine is because the style of cooking is from the Hakka region – people who are primarily found in southeastern China (Guangdong and Fujian). In places such as India, the Hakka dishes from China has been adapted and modified to represent the Indian flavor and taste. This variation of “Hakka Cuisine” is mostly Indian Chinese and popularly known as Hakka because many Chinese restaurant owners in India were of the Hakka origin.

Typical dishes found in Hakka cuisine include Chili Chicken and Manchurian Chow Mein (which is an Indian adaptation of Manchurian cuisine).

The Story

The story goes like this. One day a few buddies of mine decided that it would be a good idea to get together and catch up. Knowing that everyone did not eat the following afternoon, a friend suggested that we try this restaurant that served ‘Hakka’ food. My first reaction to the suggestion was hesitant. I honestly did not feel like eating more Chinese food only because Chinese food was something that I ate quite often. However, I was told that the restaurant got five stars and good reviews. Therefore, trying not to be difficult, I thought to myself ‘what the hell, lets just give it a shot’. So we got into the car and headed to Royal Jasmine.

Four Hungry Superheros

The Review

Upon entering the restaurant, you will notice in the front waiting area that the restaurant has been given numerous awards. From taste, quality and Best Restaurant, you can be assured that whatever dish you order, the food will come out great or just MIND BLOWING!!

Although the restaurant is in a plaza, the establishment is well decorated and most importantly finely lit. I find that having good lighting is an important key factor because it helps create a mood along with a theme. When you enter Royal Jasmine, you will notice that the lighting of the restaurant is warm. Orange and reddish tints fill the restaurant which creates the oriental feel. In addition to the setting, the waiters and waitresses all dress accordingly with traditional Asian uniforms to reinforce the oriental feel.

My first experience with Royal Jasmine was a positive one. Not only was the food great but the establishment and service was really good. Deciding what to order from the restaurant was quite problematic only because the menu selection was very LARGE. When I say large, it is large! You can probably spend 15 minutes looking at the menu and still not know what to order. So to make a long story short, I will list the items that we ordered.

1. Chicken Pakora
2. Chili Chicken
3. Cashew Beef
4. Chicken Manchurian Chow Mein
5. Pineapple Fried Rice

Five dishes is a lot of food. However, when you have four big guys who are starving, five dishes would be considered the right amount. We first started with the appetizer – the chicken pakora. A pakora is a deep fried fritter using flour batter and other various ingredients. This dish alone is good when it has some spice. If you can eat spicy, get it extra spicy. I find that their hot sauce is quite mild and not spicy enough to satisfy the hot sauce fanatic. To describe the taste, it is almost like eating a crunchy / spicy chicken ball. It was very good, although some of my buddies mentioned that the pakora is not as good as Fredericks (will review later). Nonetheless, I feel that they are both equally delicious.

Chicken Pakora

The Chili Chicken comes served two ways. (1) dry and (2) with gravy. We ordered the Chili Chicken with gravy. What I loved about this dish was that the dish came with a bowl of rice. So when you have gravy and white rice nothing is more perfect than that. Just get your white rice and slap on some Chili Chicken with gravy and you are set. The chicken is tender and the sauce provides some good heat. This is a must get for any first timer going to Royal Jasmine.

Chili Chicken

The Pineapple Fried Rice was not exceptional. However, it was still good. I find that this dish in particular tasted the same as any other Chinese restaurant. I think this is because the process in making fried rice is pretty much universal for most restaurants. Rice, oil, egg, soya sauce and whichever meat you want in your rice. Therefore, if you decide to order this dish, it is totally up to you. You can order, chicken, pork, beef, or house fried rice.

Pineapple Fried Rice

The Chicken Manchurian Chow Mein is a definite must!!!! Please get this dish! I hope that I am not advertising, but if you are reading this I can assure you that this dish is CRAZY GOOD! I will not describe it because you will have to try the dish out yourself.

Chicken Manchurian Chow Mein

The last dish, the Cashew Beef was mediocre. I wish I can say more about this dish, however in my honest opinion the taste was very generic. Although the taste was not epic, the quality was exceptional. Each dish alone used fresh ingredients. You are probably thinking, don’t all restaurants use fresh ingredients? My answer to that question is no, not all restaurants use fresh ingredients. Royal Jasmine on the other hand does. You ask me how I know? 23 years of eating experience, that is how I know.

Cashew Beef

In the end, Royal Jasmine did not disappoint. Although I was quite hesitant at first, everything about the restaurant changed the way I felt. Food, quality, environment, and taste. The portions were proper, the pricing was average but the quality was just amazing. From being a sour face to one happy camper, Royal Jasmine is now a restaurant added to my arsenal.

On a scale out of 10 I would give Royal Jasmine Restaurant a 8/10.

Price – 8/10 – Prices are average
Taste – 9/10 – Taste is great!
Size – 7.5/10 – Portions are normal
